All good stories should have a beginning, middle and an end.
In the beginning, BWC won our first contract to install furniture at The Marriott Hotel in Broxbourne way back in 1992, when we communicated through office telephones and placed orders via fax. This contract was what turned out to be the first of a sequence of Furniture, Fittings and Equipment (FF&E) packages which then led to further FF&E packages at other Marriott hotels in Grosvenor Square and Westminster.
The company start was very small but soon we were off and running, doors opened and we made the most of the opportunity to expand our skills set and offering and secured our first carpentry and joinery package for Laing Eastern at their head office in Luton. This was a significant milestone in the early life of BWC as we had secured our first main skilled works package for a main contractor.
Carpentry and joinery is where the business remained focused, and we harnessed our ‘Preferred Sub-contractor’ status with Laing Eastern (now Laing O’Rourke) to tender for and successfully win larger and more diverse carpentry and joinery packages – a partnership which still exists today.
The business grew, experienced garnered, a skilled labour force recruited, some of whom remain to this day which allowed us to tender for larger, more bespoke carpentry and joinery packages.
This led to a natural progression of the company offering our services in supplying and installing partitioned walls, suspended ceilings and false floors, and before we knew it we had morphed into a niche shop fit out firm, securing several fit out packages at the Grafton Shopping Centre in Cambridge and Basingstoke Shopping Centre – both working for Grosvenor Estates.
Spreading our wings further, we secured our first minor demolition and strip out package at The Sheraton Hotel in Heathrow. This further broadened our skill set and product offering. In tandem on this project, we completed our first bespoke joinery project where we built an elliptical dome roof to the external reception area to the hotel foyer of The Sheraton Hotel. This became a landmark milestone for BWC as it was the first time where we had secured different work packages on the same project.
Developing on this multi-product offering, we went on to secure a Warehouse to Office conversion project in St Neots for the newly relocated Laing Engineering Group. On this project BWC carried out the strip out of the warehouse back to bare walls, and converted it into a dedicated office space, complete with partitioned walls, ceilings, floors, electrics, plumbing and finishes. A full turnkey package.
During the middle of our story so far, BWC became a Limited company, secured our first ‘overseas’ joinery contract in Paris, re-branded, secured a fleet of company vans, and grew our dedicated workforce. Today the business runs multiple contracts for a broad array of customers ranging from global main contractors, blue chip managing agents, property asset managers, institutions, associations, large property managers, and private customers.
The end? Having evolved from our first contract of furniture fitting into a niche, dedicated ‘Go-To’ subcontractor with a multi-skilled labour force, this story is far from over. In fact it’s really only just beginning…..
